We’re a Fitzroy-based, family-run masonry company with a strong connection to Melbourne’s inner suburbs. Built on decades of hands-on trade experience, Finer Point Masonry brings together a deep understanding of structural behaviour with a genuine respect for heritage and period brickwork.
FOUNDING STORY
Finer Point Masonry was founded in late 2018 by Paul Smith, following more than a decade working in underpinning, restumping, and foundation repair across Melbourne. That background built a deep understanding of how buildings move and why brickwork fails — knowledge that continues to inform every repair and restoration we undertake.
After a serious health setback and a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis at 28, Paul stepped away from the physically demanding side of foundation work and redirected his experience toward heritage masonry. Finer Point Masonry grew through persistence, careful workmanship, and a clear focus on cracked brickwork repairs and heritage restoration.
In 2020, the business became a family partnership when Paul’s father, Rob Smith, joined FPM, bringing decades of industry knowledge and a shared commitment to honest advice and quality work. Today, FPM remains proudly family-run, locally based, and focused on doing things properly.
Meet the Team
FOUNDER & PARTNERPaul
Paul oversees the day-to-day running of Finer Point Masonry and leads all repair and restoration work. With a background in complex foundation repairs and a deep technical knowledge of heritage brickwork, he brings a practical, considered approach to every project. Paul is passionate about preserving heritage buildings properly and works in line with Burra Charter principles, offering clear guidance and hands-on expertise.
PARTNER & SALES CONSULTANTRobert
Rob has spent over 50 years in the building industry, including decades leading large-scale underpinning works on heritage structures across Melbourne. Originally planning retirement, he joined Finer Point Masonry in its early years, helping shape it into the family business it is today. Rob brings a lifetime of knowledge, sound judgement, and a straightforward approach to client advice.

Jarryd has been part of the Finer Point Masonry team since 2021 and is highly skilled in tuckpointing and detailed heritage restoration. Calm, capable, and meticulous in his work, he plays a key role on site. As Paul’s brother-in-law, he’s also very much part of the family and the culture that underpins the business.

Tom is one of our senior foremen and has installed more Helifix stitch ties than just about anyone we know. With a background in demolition and a strong feel for mortar work, he’s known for getting tricky repairs back into shape. A long-time friend of Paul’s, Tom brings experience, reliability, and a steady presence to every job.

Bretty joined Finer Point Masonry in 2024 and quickly became a valued part of the team. He’s hands-on, adaptable, and always keen to learn, supporting all aspects of brickwork repair and restoration. Dependable on site and easy to work with, Bretty fits naturally into the close-knit FPM crew.
Our background in foundation and masonry repair allows us to accurately diagnose cracking, carry out repairs properly, and, where required, restore brickwork using heritage-appropriate techniques that respect the original fabric of the building. We believe in honest advice, clear communication, and practical solutions.
