  • Mortar repointing is the process of removing damaged, loose or deteriorated mortar from between the bricks and replacing it with a suitably formulated new mortar.

    Mortar is an essential part of any masonry wall. It binds the brickwork together, accommodates minor movement and helps manage moisture within the wall. When mortar begins to erode or fail, the surrounding brickwork can become increasingly exposed to weather and water ingress.

    Common signs that your brickwork may require repointing include:

    • Missing or receding mortar joints

    • Loose, powdery or crumbling mortar

    • Cracking through mortar joints

    • Gaps that allow water into the wall

    • Previous repairs that do not match the original brickwork

    • Mortar that is significantly harder than the surrounding bricks

    • Brickwork that appears tired, patchy or poorly maintained

  • Using the correct mortar is particularly important when working on older Melbourne homes.

    Traditional brickwork was commonly constructed using softer, more breathable lime-based mortars. Repointing these buildings with an overly strong cement mortar can trap moisture and contribute to damage to the bricks over time.

    We assess the existing brickwork and select a mortar that is appropriate for the building. Depending on the age and construction of the property, this may include a traditional lime mortar, a carefully proportioned lime and cement mortar, or a cement-based mortar for newer brickwork.

    We take care to match the colour, texture, aggregate and joint profile of the existing mortar as closely as practical. This is especially important on heritage façades, where poorly matched mortar can noticeably change the appearance and character of the building.
