Esk House is a late Victorian home in Hawthorn East, built in the 1880s, and this project was all about carefully bringing the façade back to life. The brief was to remove the painted finish and restore the original brickwork and detailing, allowing the house’s character to be seen again.

Once the paint was stripped using a specialised product suited to historic bricks, the extent of earlier wear and patch repairs became clear. We carried out brick relaying and replacement using carefully matched bricks and installed Helifix stitch ties throughout to help stabilise cracked areas. Where cracking extended internally, stitch ties were also installed and the solid plaster reinstated to make good.

A number of the original decorative render details around the windows and parapet were damaged or missing and no longer available. To address this, we produced custom moulds to replicate the original embellishments, casting and installing new pieces to match the existing profiles. With the structure and detailing reinstated, the project was finished with tuckpointing to restore the home’s original two-tone brickwork, bringing the façade back to how it would have been seen in its early years.
